GREEN CRUISE PORT Final Conference Declaration

The cruise shipping sector in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) has grown significantly and it is expected that growth continues. The industry should create the conditions to accommodate the expected increase of both ship calls and number of passengers in a sustainable manner.
The “Green Cruise Port” project has been initiated in 2016 to elaborate a strategic approach for a sustainable and qualitative development of cruise shipping in port areas. Green Cruise Port is a project of 20 partners led by port authorities. The project was funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2014-2020.
Several studies and workshops have been carried out to gather knowledge on how to reduce port and cruise vessel related emissions in the port area and strengthen the economic effects of cruise tourism.
The Closing Conference of the BSR Interreg Project “Green Cruise Port – Smart Cruise Port Developments in the Baltic Sea Region” in Tallinn, Estonia, on 7 February 2019 hands over the Green Cruise Port Action Plan 2030 to the public and all stakeholders. The Action Plan sets out an overall vision to decouple growth from negative sustainability.

The Green Cruise Port Action Plan provides concrete and practical information on how to reduce the ecological and social impacts of cruise port operations. Consequently, the Green Cruise Port Action Plan will serve as an important tool and source of reference for the project partners and all involved stakeholders, which are striving for a high level of sustainability.
The partners of Green Cruise Port and the participants of the Closing Conference discussed the perspectives of passenger cruise operation in ports of the Baltic Sea Region and the neighboring North Sea Area. They will use the Green Cruise Port Action Plan 2030 to support strategic and operational decisions to foster sustainability in ports. Furthermore, they encourage all ports and stakeholders to consider the Action Plan to support the development of sustainable cruise port locations in the upcoming decade.
